Shift at Midnight is a first-person horror game that combines gas station management with investigation and survival. Players work during overnight shifts at a convenience store where some customers are secretly doppelgangers impersonating humans. The main objective is to manage the station, identify suspicious visitors, and survive until the end of each shift. The game supports solo play and cooperation between up to three players, allowing participants to divide responsibilities while investigating customers.
Identifying Customers Who Are Not Human
Every customer entering the store must be examined before they leave. Players can question visitors, inspect their identification documents, and compare personal information with records stored on the computer. Doppelgangers may provide incorrect answers or display behavior that does not match the person they are impersonating. Identifying these inconsistencies is necessary because allowing an impostor to leave can create a dangerous situation later in the night.
Running the Gas Station
Investigation is only one part of the gameplay. Players must also complete ordinary store responsibilities, including receiving deliveries, restocking shelves, cleaning the premises, and serving customers. Each shift has a sales quota that must be reached. Managing these activities becomes more difficult when several customers arrive while other tasks remain unfinished.
The main gameplay activities include:
· Serve customers at the checkout counter.
· Inspect identification documents.
· Compare customer details with computer records.
· Ask questions to identify suspicious answers.
· Receive deliveries and restock merchandise.
· Clean the store and meet sales requirements.
· Barricade entrances when monsters appear.
· Set traps and hide from dangerous creatures.
Surviving Mistakes During the Night
If players fail to identify a doppelganger, the creature may return in a monstrous form and attack the station. At this point, the gameplay changes from investigation to survival. Players must reinforce doors, prepare traps, and find hiding places before the threat reaches them. Cooperation becomes important because different team members can handle defenses, monitor entrances, or complete remaining tasks.
Shift at Midnight includes a story mode with 13 shifts that use randomized conditions. Customer identities, encounters, and other events can change between attempts, preventing players from relying on a fixed sequence. To progress, examine each visitor carefully, keep the station operating, and prepare for emergencies. Players must balance the time spent checking documents with the need to complete store duties. Surviving each shift requires accurate decisions, resource management, and quick reactions when a dangerous customer gets past the counter.
